Happy birthday, Mom! (and look at this step stool!)

This is the third year I've used this photo of my mom as a little girl for her birthday post.  She's not really one for getting her photo taken-I don't know why, though-she looks great.

I just wanted to show off my new 'vintage' step stool.  Nope-not from Goodwill.  From Hubby!  His aunt wanted him to get rid of it, but instead he brought it home to me!

Look-flip up the lid and tada-a step stool!  I haven't cleaned it up yet, but after I do-I'll probably try to squeeze it in here somewhere.

Meet Liberty, Forrest, and Rocco

I've decided to start naming the rag rugs.  This is Liberty.  She's not quite done-just a few more rows to make her 36 inches and she'll be ready to go.

This is Forrest.  (Greens and browns-get it?)  He's a handsome lad, I think.

And here'sssssssssssss Rocco.  Of course, you've already met him many times. 

You're a good dog, Rocco.  :)  (And handsome too, in my opinion.)

Thrifting goodness

Monday, I needed to go to town to stop at the grocery store, bank, post office (to mail some packages-wink, wink) and of course, I had to stop at Goodwill.

I LOVE finding handmade pottery at Goodwill.   This sweet vase jumped right in my cart.  I paid full price for him too.  99 cents!  I tried my darndest to read the name etched in the bottom-ummmm-thanks, DAWNY(?)!

I thought Mz. Mushroom (she's a ceramic salt shaker) was the cutest thing, so I brought her home with me for the full price of 49 cents.

My good friend, Dawnie (not to be confused with Dawny), gave me the pottery bowl that I have my dish soap sitting in.  I believe she bought it at Goodwill too.  You know this bowl is dated 1978, but she doesn't look a day over 21!

Finally-the latest rug made from mostly goods from Monday's trip to Goodwill.  Waverly sheets (polyester) and Columbia sheets (polyester too) and off-brand sheets (poly/cotton) were all from Goodwill.  I added two tees from my  t-shirt stash and the center is a small piece of fabric from my dwindling fabric stashhhhhhhhhhh.

Tuesday morning miscellany

Yes, more rugs. 

I thought I'd list what I hacked up to be put in this one.  Starting from the center-curtain from Goodwill, dusty rose- curtains from my mom, dark brown-a size medium shirt from my closet (I haven't been able to wear medium for a few years), blue-sheets and curtain, brown-my shirt, pinks-sheets, blue-curtains, tan-my too small pants, mom's curtains, the darker tan-a regretable fabric purchase (fake moleskin, wasn't the right color), mom's curtains, and regretable fabric purchase again.

 

This one has mostly fabric scraps, Goodwill sheets, Goodwill curtains, and some curtains from my sister.



I thought these big (Rocco's, of course) and small footprints in the snow were cute and funny.

 

The sun was shining in on this cabinet the other day while I had the door hanging open and I thought it was purty, so I snapped a pic.

I finally found something to make with this double-knit retro looking fabric that I bought in '09.

Dutch Dutch Baby

Tastes like chicken!  No, no, it doesn't-it tastes a lot like French toast to me, only a little eggier.  This is the first time I've ever made a Dutch baby (also known as Amish baked pancake) and I thought it was delish.

I got the recipe from Dawn at Quilted Noodles.  Now I need more eggs so I can make another one!

A new corner (and some new rugs, of course!)

I found a new way to display rugs!  Hang them on my pink ladder.  She was just leaning there against the wall with nothing to do, so I gave her a job.  I likey!  I got the idea from roses&pearls' Flickr photostream.  I love the rugs they sell in their Etsy shop too.

I've made three more rugs similar to the patchworky one I showed the other day.  Pretty, yes?

Have heart

Well, it all started with a chip-a heart-shaped, barbeque, potato chip.  I went to eat a chip and when I noticed it was heart shaped-I took a picture of it. 

Then my girlie stopped in with a little giftie for me-this heart mug.  (Heart-shaped rock added for visual interest.)  She says in a false high pitched voice, "I suppose you'll put that on your blog?"  And I say, " Why yes, yes I will!  I just took a picture of a heart-shaped potato chip this morning-so this will go perfectly!"  She then rolls her eyes.  That's what happens when the daughter thinks the mother is slightly off her rocker! 

I had a little heart theme going-so I snapped a few more photos of heart things in the house-there are so many to choose from.  This is a heart garland made from a wool sweater.  The little heart hanger is something I've had since the eighties.

 

And here's my kitchen light from the eighties.  Hearts were very popular in the eighties.  But really-do hearts ever go out of style-I mean, everybody has one.

Thrifting goodness and more

After church on Sunday, I stopped at Goodwill.  I picked up this VERY colorful afghan (the one on top) for 29 cents.  I just love my pile o' blankets in my bedroom!

Oh, and this winter bunny print and frame (you can't tell from the photo, but it's got glitter on it) hopped in my cart for the low, low price of 15 cents.

I'm happy-snow has once again blanketed our area.  I love me some flakage!

Yesterday's and today's rugs.  They contain tea towels, bed skirts, curtains, and sheets, many of which I bought on Sunday at Goodwill from the 29 cent rack.

1) I went to my girlie's place yesterday.  We ate at Eat-n-Park.  My mom was there too and she bought me a smiley cookie to go.  Yum, yum!

4) My girlie-at around 3 years.  Man, I love when she shows those pearly whites!

Rag ball by Jess



My beautiful niece, Jess, stayed with me Friday night.  All we ever do when she stays is watch movies, surf the net, eat kettle corn, and nap (me).  But this time I was tearing fabric into strips and winding it into rag balls while watching said movies.  She was curious, and wanted to try her hand at it, so let her do it I did.  My mom had included mauve curtains in the huge bag of sheets she had given me.  So Jess helped me out and made me two very compact mauve rag balls.  ( So very compact-almost like a softball.  In fact, she threw one at me and it hit me in the back and man!-it hurt.)  Don't worry-I got her back (and I've got her back-always!).  I made her do a little photo shoot with one of her rag balls.  I was being really fussy about the way I wanted the rag ball held-I made her hold it up there so long her arm got tired.  HA!

I LOVE her!

New snow, new rugs

Lint, snow, tree, snake, eggs, and a skillet!



I have a confession to make.  I made a rug yesterday and one today.  I can't stop! 

See the lint?  This is where I've been sitting to tear my fabric into strips.  I must get this cleaned up soon.  Okay, maybe not.  Ehhh-what's the difference?



It snowed today.  I do love my snow, but my child is driving on snow covered roads tonight and that always makes me a bit nervous!

I hugged a tree today.

I found a tiny snake in the driveway.  At first I thought it was real, but upon closer inspection-I realized it was plastic.  My  kiddo would play with these in the bathtub when she was little (remember that freaked you out, Rhonda?).  I have no idea where this came from.  Perhaps it was unearthed from the driveway, somehow.

I'm wearing my husband's boots.  Attractive, eh???



I ventured to the basement and retrieved this 12 inch cast iron skillet.  It has been down there for years and years.  I wanted to try cooking on cast iron again.  It was a little rusty so I scrubbed it up with some oil and salt, rinsed it, then wiped it down with oil again.  Then I put it in the oven at 300 degrees for about half an hour.  (You're suppose to for an hour, but it smelled really bad, so I took it out.)  (It would be best to 'bake' it at 250 for an hour then just let it cool in the oven.)   I lightly buttered it and made some scrambled eggs.  It worked like a charm. 



To clean it-I just wiped it out.  Easy peasy.  I think I might like me some cast iron cooking.

(By the way-this was my sister, Jodie's.  I think it was one of her wedding gifts.  She gave it to me many, many years ago, but I never used it.  Until now!)
