Handkerchief curtain

The next project from Handmade Home-handkerchief curtain. The handkerchief curtain came to be from Amanda Soule's (the author of Handmade Home) need to showcase some of her grandmother's vintage handkerchiefs. In the book she suggests that you could sew a simple curtain from repurposed sheets or something similar and then stitch the vintage handkerchiefs to them, so they could be enjoyed every day.

Well, I don't have any hankies lying around the house, but I had seen some simple white ones with embroidered flowers on at Dollar General. I finally remembered to look for them last time I was there. They cost a dollar for two-10.5 inch by 10.5 inch hankies. I bought two-two packs for two dollars total.

I went ahead and cut the hankies down to six inch squares around the embroidered flower. Then I stitched them to my already existing curtains with floss. I didn't feel like taking my curtains down (I had just put them back up!), so I stitched them on while they were hanging. I think they're kind of cute!

And you know-I was thinking-these hankies from the dollar store would make a cute quilt top. You can't really beat a 10.5 inch square of fabric with embroidery all ready to be sewn together for 50 cents. Someday-I may buy a bunch and give it a try!
